The Sweet Escape Patisserie: The Distillery District

by Lauren Ching on May 10, 2011

Want a tasty treat to make your day? Head to The Sweet Escape Patisserie, located in the distillery district. Three years old and going strong, this darling little eatery specializes in catering soups, salads, sandwiches, and a sinful variety of unique baked goods that will blow your taste buds and quite possibly, your waistline.

Sweet little white tables with old school magazine cutouts under the glass make it quirky and cartoony. They’re open 6 days a week in the winter, and 7 days a week in the summer, so there’s always an opportunity to come sit and enjoy some fresh goodies.

Everything is made on site; cookies, macaroons, cupcakes, smores bars, and more. You MUST try the homemade pop tart – a modern spin on an old favourite, with fillings that change daily such as chocolate hazelnut, strawberry tart, and nutella. (*drool*) They also make all types of delicious treats to go, such as shortbreads like savoury lavender, and smoked paprika.

While their first focus is on their food and their catering business, they still make a nice cup of joe. Merchants of Green Coffee put together a special custom blend that’s smooth with minimal bitterness, and the super automatic espresso machine makes sure that its right every time. Try their unique “Canadian, Eh,”coffee, (also known as a Red Eye or Al Pacino) which is a shot of espresso in drip coffee – a favourite for caffeine junkies everywhere.

For food, you’ll always find homemade soups, quiche, and salads, with vegetarian and vegan options. They also carry gluten free desserts to cater to the health conscious. In the summer they make their own ice creams, with lavender being the big crowd pleasure. They also have a maple apple glazed doughnut with caramelized bacon SPRINKLES. Yes. It’s real. Apparently bacon is the new sprinkle. And yes … yes I ate it. I had to try it. And now I’m going to go run on the treadmill for an hour and a half.
